Prescribed Burn on Apalachicola National Forest Today (April 2)

The Apalachicola National Forest is conducting a prescribed burn of about 1,196 acres which began at about 11 a.m. today in unit #356.  See Prescribed Burn Map

Location of the prescribed burn is approximately five miles west of Sopchoppy near the end of State Highway 22, south of State Highway 22, west of Forest Roads 338 and 340 and east of the Ochlockonee River.  Prescribed burning is integral to the forest’s health in that it improves wildlife habitat, eliminates vegetation build-up and reduces the threat of wildfires.

People are reminded that the smoke they may see today and tomorrow in this vicinity is not coming from a wildfire.  Motorists are cautioned to drive slowly with lights on while traveling in smoky areas.

This is one of many prescribed burns the Apalachicola National Forest will be doing during the 2010 prescribed burning season.
